ICU unit

Post by pugwash »

Hi, looking for some guidance please, broke down coming back from Stonor, losing power, backfiring, then cut out, no previous problems, after an hour, AA thinks its the ICU, after a while it runs for a bit then loses power, there was plenty of oooomph in the battery, relayed home charged the battery and it starts ok, runs for 10 mins and tried moving it, it dies after 15metres and wont start again.
Also Im thinking there may be a elec problem elsewhere, loose connection etc, b4 I change the ICU unit.
What s all the symptoms that can happen if the unit starts to, or des pack up :? :(
Thanks in advance
:ok

is it injection or carb. carb system pretty basic. runs a coil, dizzy and ignition module.

try and work out if its spark or fuel related. easy way to diag fuel is to have a can of easy start at hand and as the engine falters and goes to cut out spray a LITTLE bit of easy start down the carbs if it races then it looks like fuel fault if it still dies away then probally spark related.

spark testers can be bought cheaply and can give a visual to spark strength.

can help more if we know exact system your running.

Hi,

Bentley Manual has a step by step guide on ignition diagnostics to see if its coil / hall sender / amplifier unit / idle stabiliser (or something else thats none of these).

Well worth picking up a copy if you do a lot of your own DIY - far far better than the Haynes.

I do have a copy of the ignition section if you need a copy - PM me your email adress if you need.

Cheers,

Alex

if its draining the battery in 4 hours and the battery is not faulty then its likely to be the alternator. theres not many other things that will drain the battery that quickly. headlights would but you`d see them.

if you switch everything off and fit an ammeter between the battery negative and the battery earth lead you should have no more than 0.3 amps if i remember correctly.

if you havent got access to an ammeter then you can do a similar test by removing and replacing the earth lead on the battery in the dark and lookin to see if it sparks. " just touch the earth lead to the batt neg post gently " bigish sparks are no good. disconnect alternator and do the same test again if there is a big reduction in the sparking its likely to be alternator.

????????????????????? give it a try. lee.

Found the drain, it was in the water pump,"her who must be obeyed", must have knocked the switch on (replacement rocker switch) cant hear it as the motor must be u/s by now!
Any way changed the ICU unit, everything seems fine at the moment, test tomorrow...............take it out for a ride!!!!!
