On Diesels there are a variety of ways, removing the air filter just before the test is one, not sure about gas guzzlers though sorry.

Had similar on ours last year, replaced the air flow meter for this year and it was way under, it was one that I had bought a few years ago as a spare.
I am no mechanic but I think there is a adjustment screw on the air flow meter that may be able to be adjusted.
If not replace the air flow meter, there are some ebay now and again.
I am sure that Steve at Gas Sure refubished them at one time but don t know if he still does.
