Timing notches
When I used to own minis there was a notch on the flywheel and on the block, you coup paint these White and set the timing with a strobe light. Is there something similar on my 1900 watercooled (dog leg gearbox) engine?

Re: Timing notches
If its the same as my 2.1 DJ you need to be looking at the crankshaft pulley and you will see two notches. The one nearest you is TDC and the one nearest the block is the actual timing mark. If you only have one notch then that should be your timing mark. To set the timing the mark is lined up with the join in the crankcase halves.
You need to remember that various idle stabiliser plugs and vacuum lines have to be disconnected / blocked in order to set the timing accurately and these differ depending on which type of engine you have. Its worth investing in a Haynes to get this right.
As always on things mechanical I would stress that I am not an engineer and there are a lot of people on here who are. I just thought this might be holding your bank holiday tasks up, hence the post.
