New gearbox rebuild popping out of 5th
Firstly I will ask Aiden about this but i think he has gone on holiday today.
Just got my gearbox rebuilt by Aiden. it was fitted by a mechanic today. Everything runs smoothly bar 5th.
I have driven 10 miles in it and it keeps popping out of 5th gear.
It will go into 5th easily enough but after a couple of minutes the gearstick just pops back to the neutral position and then it is out of 5th. The only way it will stay in is if i hold the gearstick back in the 5th position.
any clues please?

quickest is to shorten the rod on the splines , just a touch and dont loose the rotational alignment, renewed box will be nice and precise on the internals sounds like it needs to go in/engage a bit more.

Ahhh, underneath, just behind the petrol tank, thing is I dont know the link someone else can help?wiki? but also worth checking that as the box has been out has the linkage been refitted to the box the correct side , ? I'd check this first before adjusting the spline, as the chances of there being a fault in one of aidens rebuilds is so unlikely that a bookie wouldnt give odds

I could be drawn to give odds AGAINST it being Aidan's fault, and believe me I don't gamble. As said it sounds very much like a linkage fine-tuning issue

Believe me i dont think it is Aiden's fault. its just that he is away and i am looking for clues as to how to fix it.

Follow the linkage back from the fuel tank and there's a collar and pinch bolt. Note a tiny movement here is vastly bigger at the lever. Having a chum with 2 13mm spanners will be an advantage

Or give it back to the mechanic and get him to do it!

Re: New gearbox rebuild popping out of 5th
Doesnt drop out of 3rd then?? or havent you had it in 3rd for long enough?
the "onion" bracket thats bolted to the box is on the correct face?? (someone just check please coz with beer induced brain fade and the truck 700 miles west of me I cant go look to see
) as if its not, it will prevent the gear from going in propper..
Worn or loose joints dont help either...
