Await Aidan's expert advice but I believe the bellhousings and the ratios are different.

your 1.6 n/a diesel box will be fine in a 1.6 n/a but if you've upped the engine to say a 1Y you'd be better off with one from a 1.9 petrol

Re: are all the T3 5 speed boxes interchangeable?
yes they did about 100 different gearboxes over the course of the T3 to suit all the various engines and uses
no stronger but appropriately geared
the 3H is the same as a 1.9 petrol ABN box but with a diesel bellhousing and input shaft

Re: are all the T3 5 speed boxes interchangeable?
Hi,
I have recently acquired a camper converted 1979 Microbus, originally 1.6 petrol Aircooled but now with 1.9 VW Vento diesel engine fitted. The new engine is fine, but it still has the original 4 speed gearbox, giving me a very low cruising speed..
Any recommendations as to where I could lay hands on a reconditioned (or otherwise) 5 speed? If I am buying from a private seller, what do I need to look out for, compatability wise? (code numbers etc) The idea that VW made 100 different gearboxes for the T25 is daunting news..!
Cheers.
