Ignition Coil - Green or grey Label?

Post by T25Convert »

Hi,

I've a problem starting, which has been traced back to the coil (its odd, van doesn't start, give the coil a light tap with a spanner and van starts fine - checked all the connections which appear fine, so figure must be breaking down inside).

Only trouble is, what do I need to replace it with - a grey or green labeled coil (as the Brickwerks site lists both and suggests they are different). Before the smart remarks start I can't look at the one on there as its a generic "Intermotor" model with an electric blue label.....

Its a 1985 model, 1.9 WBX.

Grey, green, or any generic coil?? Don't want to break hall sender or ignition module by fitting the wrong one!

Cheers in advance,

Alex

211 905 115 B upto chassis E155000
211 905 115 D after that

never figured out the difference between the green and the grey it's a years thing, but nothing else in the ignition system changes concurrently so it probably doesn't matter which

Hi All,

I have the same problem as Alex (OP) in that I have a coil without a grey or green sticker, and no OE part number. I was about to order one from Brickwerks - then discovered from the Haynes Manual there's a difference between the grey and green stickered coil (if it's correct!) as follows:

Secondary resistance:
green sticker - 2.4 to 3.5 k ohms
grey sticker - 6.9 to 8.5 k ohms

... so I guess it is important to get the right one?

With ref to Aidan's reply - I can't read the chassis number on our van though I'm told it's the last 6 or 7 digits of the VIN? If so, it's well past chassis no. E155000, so would I be right presuming the grey one is the latest/correct one?

Our van is an '89 1.9 petrol water cooled (DG). Many thanks in advance for any help!

From another topic on here today =

When you say =

[bold by me] - I have been trying to figure this out since I first got into T25s 12 years ago. I (we) "need" to know because as you say, so many of our vans have parts from differing years fitted. I would love to know what part dictates what coil (green or grey). I don't think it's the ignition amp (correct term for what you are calling an ECU btw). Someone might know..........

bigherb wrote:Green sticker coils fit everything with electronic ignition. Grey sticker higher output coils where fitted to later engines that used the long life two/thee electode spark plugs. If you only use standard single electrode plugs green sticker will do. Doesn't apply to aircoolers they used a different coil.

ghost123uk wrote:So can you use the higher output Grey sticker coil where a Green sticker coil had been ? (logic tells me yes ?)

bigherb wrote: Yes, but you won't get any benefit.

:ok
