I still havent got around to it but I planned to cut away the bulb holders, open up the holes in the back of the lenses and fit LED arrays (grids) to get a more even light rather than the pathetic glow they emit now. Considering the space the rear lights occupy, they aren't much better than the rear lights on an old comma van and just don't compare to modern tail lights. Frankly I've seen better rear lights on pushbikes.

I did consider fitting completely different lights. There are some great ones designed for lorries/trailers but they just won't look right which is why I dismissed that idea. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/REAR-TAIL-LIGHTS- ... 20b9196c23" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

At the moment I run with LED replacement bayonet bulbs but these are little better than tungsten in many ways due to the limited light pattern of LEDs - other than the fact they respond quicker. That said, I'm not convinced that the fresnel effect of the lenses themselves are that great. Need to do some experiments I think....

Hong Kong LED bulbs fine - saves battery power if you're unfortunate enough to break down in the dark. Can often be brighter than stock bulbs and respond faster - gives extra safety margin for anyone behind if you have to brake hard. Disadvantage is they don't make full use of the light pods (neither did the tungsten ones) and some makes of LED replacement bulbs are very poor quality lasting a few months if that. Ideal is a grid of LEDs made to fit/fill each light compartment but thats definitely DIY. Unlike regular bulbs, for stop/brake lights you need red LEDs not white as the lenses were not designed for that level of light intensity - unless you're into pink rear lights.....
