firstly change the air filter if it hasn't been done

Your symptoms can be investigated yourself.
Firstly check all the vacuum pipes for security and perishing.
you should have no air getting in the inlet side apart from the air filter box and crank breather.
This includes failure of the brake servo pipe, the choke pull down unit, and any gaskets.

next, is the auto choke. The Haynes gives a good description of it's set up.
You can check it by looking at the choke flap when cold and hot.
when cold it should be almost closed (3mm gap)
when hot it should be FULLY open.
Remove the three nuts and take off the pancake duct and look.

Back fire is indicative of an air leak on the inlet side causing a weak mixture and unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust

Get back to us when you have checked these things out :ok
