Something missing from top of clutch housing.

Post by pmoc_2001 »

Hi,

I was hunting for rust in the sides of my engine bay and spotted something strange. As you can see something is missing from the top of the clutch/fly wheel housing. Looking inside I can see a metal triangle and a large gear. There is plastic around a metal thread in the hole. It does not feel right that I can look into my engine like this and clearly something is wrong. I've checked the wiki and I'm not sure what to do to fix it or if there is any long lasting damage.

Thanks for the advice. Why would anyone want to look in there. Is it to do with setting something up?

Yep and the little triangle is very important, its the pointer that points to a notch in the clutch/flywheel for timing as Mr Weldore has 'point! ed' out :rofl

The bung comes in two bits and is common to alot of VW's as access to see timing marks either for ignition or mechanical pump timing.
The loop and centre bung are missing on yours leaving the main screw bung in the bell housing. As this part was used on many models I would think it's still available otherwise just find anything to block the hole.

I've looked on ETOS and it seems that this particular part does not have a part number associated with it. Does anyone know the part number or where I can buy the bung?

Thanks

Thank you very much. How did you find the part number? I only ask because using my van's details in ETOS gave a nil return.

Etos has it too, on the gearbox case page, plug is just over a quid from VW, a cork will do the job nicely too
