Rumble from front on full lock, cv/bearings or both

Post by jd1000 »

Hi, just almost passed 1st mot, failed on o/s front wheel bearing (phew), seriously didn't know what I was going to get.

Thing is I've had a little rumble (very faint) last 5000 miles (from the front somewhere) so I've been waiting for it to get louder to pin point it but its only lately it makes that noise on not so small/tight lock roundabouts etc.

The front bearing has to be done thing is, is the rumble (a repeative grind that only happens when going clock wise round very small roundabouts) is that one of the cv's going too?

Can wheel bearings last that long, do they rumble in a staight line too. If it is just the bearing I'll get a mechanic but if its a cv it would be good to know so I can have the 2 cv's too and get it all done in one go as it should be cheaper (labour costs) I'm thinking.

Thanks in advance.

It does sound like the bearing, when CVs go they make a distinctive crunching sound. Be a good idea to strip and inspect the CV joints, then re-grease and re-use if OK. The original joints were good quality and if wear is acceptable should be re-used.

Thanks for the reply.

Got my head/ears thinking about the diff between rumble/crunching :) but yeah thanks I'll hang fire on buying outer/inner cv's (ouch) till I let a mechanic recommended here say one way or the other.

Saying that not a bad idea to have spares like them when in europe, hmm, got a used spare inner cv so maybe get the outer and then I'm covered.

Saying that £111 for the outer cv and never need/use/carry, guess thats what sleep is for because I don't know :)

Thanks again mate.
