Why can you not have a small 2 man tent on the same pitch at a large no. of sites when you can have an awning?
Looking to go away locally with my family ad two other adults and don't want or need two pitches particularly however my lack of awning means I get no choice.
Considering the logistics this does seem a bit of a scam.

Typical British campsite rip-off. Abroad you tend to pay for the pitch and then per person plus electric on top. Here they want to know how many breaths you may want to take !

Re: Camping without an awning costs!
the trick is to talk to them first....... tell them your awning isnt a drive away, its a tent.
i have done this a few times, seems to work.....

Re: Camping without an awning costs!
Until last year (now have posh awning
) we always had a camper and large tent on site. Thats two adults and one dog. Total rip off if they and try charge you any different. After all if you were camping with a tent only you'd still have to arrive in some sort of a vehicle
..the answer is go to another site.

I wonder weather the trick is to not tell them and chance it?
The price once you factor in extra people and a car is not much but we don't really need the space. They could get another person on site thus more money for them.

Re: Camping without an awning costs!
We too had no awning last year and our campsite told us we could use the tent but couldn't use the camper as well, if we did we would have to pay for two pitches....it worked out cheaper to buy an awning......incidently I got an awning at a car boot sale for £5.00!!! with no poles included. When I got it home it was for a caravan but for £20 I managed to get a complete set of new poles from the manufacturer and then trade it in against a driveaway awning at my local camping shop/campsite...they gave me £80 for it......so the new awning (last years colours at the time) cost me a total of £120.....
Good luck with your search....

Re: Camping without an awning costs!
I used to have a drive away awning but hated it and got one of those big Qercha pop up tents instead, the ones you can stand up in. However the footprint of it is still smaller than the awning. Whenever I've booked at a campsite I've just booked as a motorhome and awning - never had a problem. Not even at Caravan Club or camping and caravan club sites where you might think they'd be more sniffy. At the end of the day my van and "awning" (tent) take up less space than someone with a Mondeo and a massive tunnel tent. And they're probably paying less anyway as its normally cheaper for tents.
