rubber sealant

Hi All

Does anyone know of a good rubber sealant. Not to prevent windows leaking, but to apply to the rubber itself to stop black streaks running down the van after washing. I will eventually get round to replacing the rubbers but need a short term fix. Every time i wash van or it rains heavy, I get black streaks down the side of the van from the wondow rubbers.

The only thing i have heard on here about how to temporarily stop this is to apply a thin coat of clear mastic... suggested on paint your wagon post. Hope that helps

don't be too sure it's the fault of your window rubbers. I had exactly the same thing happening and a couple of years ago I took the windows out when the van was being resprayed. New rubbers back in and exactly the same thing happens - it might not be the van, it's probably the cr@p the rain brings down with it

Definitely the rubbers. Cloth turns black when wiped over them. Will cive the mastic a go.

I use Ambersil greasil 4000 on all my rubbers, including gaitiors, door seals and coolant pipes. Keeps them lasting longer and waterproofs the door seals. It is used in the aviation idustry so if it good enough at 20,000 ft then it must be good enough for the M1. It is also meant to waterproof electrical systems (However I have never tried it but I keep meaning to coat on old circuit board and dunc it in a cup of water and see what happens).

I am no expert but I thought if you can put a waterproof coating on the rubber it might stop it from running. Sounds like somebody has put something on the rubber to make it look better, drop of thinners before applying the greasil might do the trick.

You could try the old standby - black shoe polish - don't laugh it does work!
