Diesel wont turn off?
Intermittently the engine runs, albeit a bit lumpy after the ignition is turned off, I have tried stopping it by disconnecting the solenoid but this makes no difference, I have changed the solenoid for another (not new granted) and it was still the same, I can only assume it is something in the pump but have no idea what? Any suggestions would be gratefully received, thanks.

Re: Diesel wont turn off?
The fuel solenoid cut off switch is just that.....without fuel your engine cannot run and so stops very quickly. Even though you have changed the switch the problem still remains with the switch and it's inability to fully close the fuel off to the pump.
If this switch is OK I would be looking at how it moves and seals because it obviously isn't stopping the fuel delivery as it should.

Hi,
If its a turbo diesel it could be the first signs of turbo seals going and that it is starting to run on the engine oil. Can be catastrophic it it gets very bad and you don't stall the engine in time. Not sure if it can happen on none turbo models
Cheers.. Phil

Non Turbo Phil thanks.
Does the solenoid hold the plunger up to allow the fuel flow or does it just push the plunger down when switched off? (that is not very clear is it?)

Again if anyone is interested, it would appear that whilst changing the solenoids over the small spring that sits inside the plunger must have gone missing (on both) the picture on Wiki helped the investigation and on carefully removing another from a spare pump with spring intact the job is done.

Triffic.....sometimes you just need the reassurance that you are looking in the right place...this was always going to be the cut off solenoid.
Heavy oil burners can run on as pointed out but you definately wouldn't miss the oil smoke and smell.
