one more thing (and i realise that this has been discussed at length but i am still confused)

My syncro has had a front dif lock retro fitted, in which case i assume it has the smaller front outside cv joints, do you think that there is any point of up grading to the larger ones? and if so will they fit my current shafts?

Don't assume ask Russel which ones are fitted, but if the smaller ones I'd say stay with them, it looks like it's going to be hard enough as it is to source decent quality front outer CV's going forward let alone a rarity like 16" difflock ones - the shafts are different I believe but I have never seen a 16" locker front shaft up close and with normal one to compare

You can only fit non locking ones to non locking shafts. You have non locking shafts and there is no reason to try and upgrade.
