What is this wire from engine bay to cab?

Post by bmouthboyo »

Hi guys,

Trying to sort out some odd engine conversion wiring by previous owner.

Traced the live feed for a aux air valve and warm up regulator on my conversion and it joins to this wire that then goes off from the fues box in engine into the bulkhead with rest of loom.

Its the grey wire with red strip down it.

Any ideaS?

Some info on the van would have helped but Grey/Red is normally R/H sidelights.

Ah sorry its a 1983 Bus, DG engine code originally .

It has had another engine put in and i think the pump relay went and so owner decided quick fix is to hook all up to side light.

I had autosparky sort the relay and pump to run as should but seems the aux air valve etc has been still left hooked to this grey / red wire for its live feed.

on the lamp plug in the engine bay box all the wres are for the LIGHTS

the other connector has engine items

so as non standard your just gonna have to look behind te fusebox and see where it goes

from memory tho its the side lamps , the green stripe is for the number plate lamps.

on later vans post 86 vans with park lamps these wires are seperate

presuming you do not have park lamps as pre 86? and you have ceramic fuses not later blade type

OK Guys trying to establish where these wires originally went or are meant to go:

BLUE / GREEN WIRE

Image

At present it has been earthed, but given that its in same connector as the red / yellow temp gauge wire I am assuming it is coolant level wire?

BLACK / BLUE WIRE

Image

This currently goes to a sensor on the side of my Mk1 Gti engine head. Assuming its oil pressure warning light. However unplugging it with engine running does not cause the dash light or buzzer?

Cheers

Here's the wiring diagram for the rear lights to trailer socket so you can see it's NOT part of the original lighting loom.

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... towbar.htm

I suggest you buy a Haynes for the Golf/Jetta/Scirocco ... IF I remember and more to the point WHEN I have the time I'll look on our MkII Scirocco Injection, the problem is that there are 2 types of injection around at the same time and there seems to be no logical progression ... IIRC our J plate has the 1.8 8v K-Jetronic system as fitted to MkI Golf GTis.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for help. Yea it is a 8v DX Kjet engine. The engine itself is wired up well now. The wires in the pics I assume relate more to the T25 loom from the engine back.

The temp gauge works so I know that is ok, but I cannot see any wiring for coolant level. Thats the one in the first pic that at present is earthed I think? Just wanted to double check.

The second pic I assumed was oil low pressure sensor but unplugging it did not cause any buzzer or flashing light, so wanted to check.

Cheers

So does anyone know what the blue and green wire is for? Coolant level?

And why doesnt my buzzer go when I unplug the low pressure wire (black and blue)? MY early van doesn't seem to have a tacho feed so not sure how it would know revs are over 2000 for this either?

Thanks

Early vans don't have B.o.D anyway.

Right I've looked on the Scirocco (and got thoroughly filthy in doing so  ) and it doesn'y have a green/blue wire in the engine bay. Blue/brown goes to the sensor on the n/s of the head.

Ah thank you Ian that's a great help. I assume the black and blue light wire to the low pressure sender should flash when it is disconnected?
