Engine mounts..Engine sitting too high???

Post by cherl889 »

My bus at some point in its sorry life has been very poorly converted from a petrol to a 1.6TD, the conversion has been so badly done that the engine is sitting so high in the chassis that the injection pump sits some way above the engine cover so much so that the moron who done the conversion has cut a hole in the engine hatch to compensate for the pump!! I was just wandering if anyone could have a look at my pics of this disaster and see what mounts I need to change or adapt in order to get the engine sitting correctly, the ally mounts on the engine look like like origional vw item albeit apart form the N/S one which has been cut to allow the drain from the turbo to pass back to the sump. It also looks as if the rear most engine mount cross member is missing I vaugley remember my old 1.6d having this mount/crossmember

Thanks in advance

If the 1.6td is not fitted with a JR engine injection pump it will interfere with the engine cover. Its normal to cut out a hole for the alternative td pump .Mr baxter sells a fitting kit to cover where the hole is made .

Hi,

The engine bars look the same as mine, with the 1.6td there should be no intrusion, with the 1.9td its similar to yours. Has it been converted to 1.9?

Also exhaust is wrong and looks too small, original modified 1.6d ? if so this will restrict performance and result in higher turbo temps.

Alos it might just be the diesel fuel pump which is wrong/too high.

Looks like you have got a bit of work their,

Cheers.. Phil

Cheers chaps

The injection pump being the problem might explain things...apparently the engine was from a VW Passat ..not too sure what pumps they had fitted ...had a look at the engine cover kit on Brickwerks looks the ticket..the mans a genius :D ...just need to sort the exhaust out now

For a start one of Baxters plates (they are good as ive used two now :ok ) will not cover that pump! IF the engine was mounted correctly the top of the LDA should just be touching the engine lid - no way should it be sticking that high above the engine of the load bed/engine bay. What is O/S mount like? The engine bars do look like they have been modded but do appear to be bolted correctly onto valance/chassis rails :?

Your right in that ome monkey has cut the N/S alloy engine mounting bar to allow the return thr the middle to the sump but they have then spaced the top of the ali mount out with nuts inbetween the mount and block. This now means the bottom hasnt been sitting flush to the block so has been stressed whilst having a bloody great big hole cut in it!! The bottom of the mount looks bent/welded and possiblt fractured(hard to see thr grime). By sorting the N/S one it wil drop the engine a few degrees (posibly more if otherside is same)

For a start (IMHO) i wouldnt do anything until i had got a new ali mount fitted and sussed out what other JX parts i need (turbo/manifolds/pipes etc?????) to make a safe install that dosnt involve cutting structual cast parts, let alone one that works mechanically.

Wrong exhaust - deffinitely not JX mounts. Dosnt look like a JX flywheel etc etc.Looks like engine bars have been modded. List goes on (it even still has the golf/passat sump on it,wonder what oil pick up/pump is from)

Start saving your pennies to get the bits to do it properly. Maybe someone from forum who lives near you has one you can look at/compare.

Just my 2p :ok
