How to replace tank breathers?

Post by crazydiamond »

My breather hoses are just starting to crack up, got some 6mm pipe, Anyone changed these pipes with tank in situ I dont think its possible with the tank in situ, I have changed the tank so know all about that, but anyone tried to do the breather pipes with tank in? I dont really want to take the tank out again, it was a complete bu***r to get the filler pipe to seal again, even with a brand new rubber grommet.

dont think it is poss unless you have a four year old helper :) what I do know is if you try to remove the top hose from the breather tank you will snap off the plastic connector.

Thanks Simon and Bob, well I.ve not got a tame 4 year old but will have a go tomorrow anyway. The pipes on my 1982 are 6mm so maybe with a mk1 tank they are larger? See how it goes. hey Simon where abouts in Kiddy are you, i'm on Greenhill Hurcott rd.

Hello again i am at Mayfield Close Ferndale next time i am around greenhill i will look out for your van i was about to say what the other guy said, i was told it was better to cut the hoses off length ways to avoid breaking the bit off the bottles i was told this after i had done mine but i had no problems. If yours is the same as mine you be able to do it. Also if you fine you need 5mm hose i think ive got some i also have some 6mm as that is what i started with. If you are passing this way bang on the door and say hello the red van is on the drive most of the time. GOOD LUCK Simon.

Well tried and failed to change breather pipes with tank in situ, in fact it got worse! I broke one of the pipes on the Y plastic pipe fitting that pushes into the nearside top of tank! Have heat sealed the end for the moment, but it looks like it will be a tank out job, when I get around to it. The petrol only seaps a little when the tank has been filled to the top, so provided I keep it down a little, no petrol leaks. Anyone got a Y piece for the tank?
