More knock knock

Post by mikeytar3 »

I too have developed a speed related knock. However mine is when driving forward (not in reverse) and not on overrun or with the clutch depressed. It's definitely from the rear but no difference round corners. Has anyone any idea how to find out if it's joints or (help) gearbox or what without taking it all apart. As its a side of the road job i'd rather not start without the means to finish if possible.

With the wheels chocked, out of gear and handbrake off (to eliminate bind in the system) get under the van and start pulling things about inc. propshaft to see what's developed play. Noises do travel up the drivetrain but you should have heard v-lux's rear cv when it failed like a good'un at Coney Farm #clack#clack#clack#

There should be no radial or axial play in the prop u/j's at all. The cv's virtually no radial play but they have axial float. If you can rotate the driveshaft with the wheels on the ground, the cv's are worn.

Hope for your sake it's not like my chipped diff pinion (resulting from old age, old oil, too much pinion bearing endfloat and just possibly abuse) which did click at low speed but really howled at anything over walking speed. Rebuilt by Aidan, but budget £1k minimum if it's in this state.
Cracking job at the end though :ok

I've tried the tugging about and as far as I can see the only play is the normal in and out motion. However if I jack up the back and turn the wheel there is a click click click noise like dry gears running together, but the box is full, it was the first thing I checked. This is not sounding good to me unless anyone can offer a glimmer of hope!

Thanks to silverbullet and Aiden for diagnostic hints I now know its the gearbox
A hand full of bits of teeth on the magnetic plug.
Has anyone got a useable turbo diesel gearbox ? I'm supposed to be going on holiday on the 26th. so no time for a repair. As the prop shaft is disconnected (stiff VC) I suppose a 2 wheel drive one would get me going for the moment.
Let me know on 07710175459 if you can help, I'm near London. :ok

Not sure you can bolt a 2wd box into a syncro, as the prop rail brackets may be welded over some of the mounting holes in the crossmember? Being as the engine and box are fitted lower in the syncro body shell, the front bracket for a 2wd box won't line up anyway...

you can fit a 2wd one using the mount for a 2wd petrol of the correct length ie 4 or 5 speed according to what you fit, to drop it down enough to clear the petrol tank, the captives are in the chassis for the 2wd mounts at least on some, you'll want to clean the threads up before using them mind
sorry no spares here in stock at the mo, last loan box got broke :|

Hmmmm.
Trust nothing on a syncro to be as simple as first thought.
Guess I'll be holidaying by car and tent, a return to the days of my youth. If there's any money left after, It looks like the best option is to rebuild this one. :ok
