Late model brakes onto early wedge
Im looking around for info on how to swap late model calipers onto my early T3.
Does the bolt pattern line up ( I know I cold try but the bolts are siezed at the moment and I cant get them off) Ive heard wheel bearings are different so cant swap the discs. To swap the lot do I go from the swing arm or just the ball joint? Not sure of correct names!

haha just realiszed I cant even spell brakes, multi tasking entertaining lil one and typing!
Ive been told its possible to swap over but no one knows exactley what to do.
My 82 calipers are siezed and I have a 87 model parts van to swap from.

nope your early hub is different...
Why not just fit the early calipers, not that expensive.
£66.00 for a quality calliper and £62 for a disc
A breaker would be even cheaper

The early and late setups are very different and not just the calipers, but the uprights, the size of disc and offsets. Backing plates are different as well as the brake hoses and wheel bearings.
We do disc conversions for both early and late and would be able to machine your uprights to accept the late disc and caliper setup.

Thanks for the responses guys
So the short of it is its not possible to swap parts over from late to early?
I mustve missunderstood , just campers says you can fit the larger brakes with modification and then some one else said I have to swap the whole arm as well..confused!!
Thanks for the offer futbus but Im in Oz.
Air wedges are rare over here so not much chance of getting the calipers from a wreckers so new may be the only option $210 each for the calipers plus fittings!

Ah Oz .. You didn't say that in your first post.
I believe Late Bays were fitted with early callipers as a test run for the Coming T25.

Sorry Ive joined so many forums trying to find the answer Id forgotten to fill out those details.
Im not sure about the registration number?
Futbus I checked out your site the coil spacers loks good
SO to fill in all the blanks now Im not trying to feed the little one and post at the same time,
I have an 82 model Ive just bought with siezed front calipers and a 87 model parts van sitting beside it.
Ive got no vw knowledge other than my daily driven T4.
Ive heard that you can get the brakes of the water cooled to work on the air cooled is it just a matter of changing the knuckles out so the calipers rotors and bearing stay as designed?
If Im missing anymore info let me know I know how frustrating it is when a noob only gives you have the info!

if you have it sitting there then get it all off ...
i'm sure the bottom track control arm is different as the drop link is straight rather than dog legged, so the control arm mount might be different

Apart from the steering rack, upper wishbones, bushes, upper balljoints and IIRC outer wheel bearing it's all completely different, radius rods, discs, track control arms, bottom ball joints, drop links, ARB (thinner on very early)

Haha thanks guys, we do have civilization but from what Ive read there are less air cooled wedges in Oz than splits, and splits are thin on the ground over here!
