Recon Engine Prices

Post by TheLoveBus »

Can anyone give me some guidance on what is a decent price for a garage to quote to fit a recon engine for a T25 1.6 diesel.

Short or full engine? if full then 10 - 12 hours @ £45.00 an hour plus oil, coolant and filter (£80?)
All the anchillaries and plumbing will need swapping over, pump timing setting up, cooling system bleeding through etc etc.

short engine is the bare engine with no fuel pump/alternator/injectors/electrics etc, a full engine is exactly that - a full engine with all bits needed already bolted on :ok

Technically 'short' means the engine comes minus the cylinder head.
This assumes it is only the lower part of the engine that needs replacing and the head would be re-used.
A full engine is block/pistons/rods/crank/oil pump/sump/head with camshaft and valves and normally the cam belt, idler and pulleys but things like manifolds, diesel pump/Alternator/vacuum pump/water pump/belts etc are usually swapped over from the old engine.
Just exactly what you get varies greatly....when we ordered a FULL Merecedes engine (main dealer factory supply) it came absolutely complete..with P/S pump, Alternator, Distributor, Manifolds, all the belts and engine loom (at a price of course))

Physically chucking an engine in is a short job ... perhaps an hour ? it's the ancillarys that take the time. It's not very often you'll have the where with all to fit a complete unit, especially the diesel which appears to be physically taller. On a wbxer petrol they are almost flat so you slide that under the back with only the flywheel & clutch/driveplate and engine bar on (and perhaps the exhaust), jack it up and mate it up to the gearbox, bolt it up to the chassis and only then rebuild all the stuff that actually makes it work and look pretty ... far too many expensive plastic bits to break off before this point.

Can't speculate a time for a Derv though as I've never done one.
