Thanks for the advice, I'm not convinced the guy who re-freshed my coolant followed the flush and bleed process to the book, i.e. raising the van up on blocks to the appropriate angle, etc. I just thought it was odd how the temp climbed at a noticeable rate with the heater controls turned off, but was assured obviously when it returned to normal with the heater controls turned up.

you do not need to angle the van to bleed the system!

if you cant bleed the system there is a fault!

ever seen a slope at the vw factory?

Well that's reassuring, I thought in the Haynes manual the process is to raise the van up a foot or so at the back? Does seem a bit OTT I must admit.

I know many say it's not important, and I have not checked up. but I raise mine up at the front (just park it on a hill) - Reason being the bleed valve on the rad is the highest point on the system, so I figure make that if I raise that any air will find it's way to there.

Just don't do what I once did, fill with expensive coolant, then get it warm, then undo the rad bleed valve, but I undid it too far and the bolt shot out and loads of my freshly added antifreeze shot every where under the pressure :(
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here
