Changing the Distributor but what type?

Post by dplum »

Hi,

Haven't been able to get my 1.9 watercooled 1988 t25 started so I got he AA man out this morning. Engine turns over but really struggled to start. Apparently it was only firing on 3 cylinders but he was sure this was due to the distributor which has loose wires going into it from the ignition module which have burnt out the wires inside the distributor after all the starting i've tried!

Anyway, so he thought that straight forward replacement of the distributor should solve the problem.

So i've looked at the dizzy and it has the following codes -

Z414
0237 023 007
071 905 205

From looking in VW heritage catalogue they have the 071 905 205 code as being for a CU 2.0 engine?

My engine code is DG 154458 however, so from the catalogue the correct dizzy code is 025 905 205/AE

Do I need to change over to the correct code distributor? whats the difference? THe van has had this dizzy ever since I got it a few years back and has run ok in the past so I would rather not change the type if possible as I would like to do a like for like replacement due to my lack of knowledge and skills in this department!

I put a photo of the current set up below (i know the cap isn't on properly!):

ANy ideas or tips for refitment? Also, is there anywhere other than VW heritage who sell these distributors?

Thanks

The only electrical/electronic part of the distributor that can go faulty besides the cap/rotor is the Hall sensor circuit. That is a servicable item, but getting a used distributor will be more economical. I have only seen distributor part number 025 905 205 N on both DG and DJ engines.

You should take a closer look at the vacuum unit you have there. It looks like one from a DJ engine, the DG unit has a different shape and is smaller with only an advance connection. Just maybe the previous owner got it wrong and fitted a DJ unit.

Right, after reading the CU Distributor thread, it looks like you might have a CU vacuum unit there which would confirm that your distributor is originally from a CU engine.
