fly wheel change help

Heyup im just going to get my fly wheel changed over to a new one because its missing 7 teeth and some of the other teeth are a bit worn. Can anyone tell me in brief what the basic proceadure for this might be along with any tips or important stuff that a garage might miss androughly what should i be paying for this. Ive been quoted about 300 for the labour and parts on top. Id do it myself as im keen to learn but have not got the facilities where i am.

No need to go into great detail just basic info so i know what im talking about when i get to garage tomorrow.

Not a big job ...seems a little steep to me
put the van on ramps
then I think it's the order of ....
Undo drive shafts (12 bolts), undo selector rod (1 bolt), remove gearbox (4 bolts), remove clutch (six bolts), remove flywheel. ( 6 bolts....or is it 5?)

what years your van?

eary flywheels have built in teeth , laters are seperate ring gear

with the box out the gear could be replaced by a garage without removing the flywheel!

Thanks for the reply. Its a 1989 1600 td California. Would you be able to explain that a bit more please. Do you mean the teeth can be removed separately?

Sorry I missed you signature explaining your van year
So...
The ring is heated up (so it expands) and removed
new ring gear is heated and placed on the flywheel where it shrinks as it cools and tightens on the fly wheel

Wow thats pretty amazing stuff..i never knew that. Makes sense really. Can you do that when its still on the van or do you have to take it off ...or doesnt it matter really and its easier just to take it off?
Is that an easy process (if you have the gear) or complicated?

not sure if the diesels are seperate.

if they are it can be done on the van.

you can tap/cut the old one off if it is seperate so not much heat is applied to the flywheel.

if your going that far tho remove the clutch and check,also check the spigot bearing-although any decent garage will check and report if any problems

you may want to remove the flywheel and fit new crank seal tho as a precaution

had a look today , the diesel i just pulled has seperate ring gear so can easily be swapped without removing the flywheel from the engine!

Interesting thanks. Will be doing in in the next couple of weeks. Any ideas how that is done..how its heated up etc and how new gear is fixed back on? Also any idea of the cost of the parts?

it's heated with a gas torch I would think

i swaped mine with the fly wheel resting on a some bricks on the floor, you dont need too much heat but you need to try too spread it evernly around the fly wheel. on the wbx it is only 5 bolts (dont know about diesls), also it would be a good time to inspect the crank seals and change them while it is all apart (for what they would cost).
