Fumes in cab area (2ltr Aircooled)

I have, when the engine is at temperature, what can only be described as 'engine' fumes.

Initially I thought it might be burning oil that has been sat on my heat exchangers following a leak in the past. I have today cleaned the exchangers up and its still happening. Then I figured it must be exhaust fumes but it doesn't pump through at all times, only when I appear to be driving a particular way / wind direction etc. My van (westy) has an electric fan which pulls the 'heat' up to the cab area and even when I put this on full in a stationary position I get no fumes in

I've looked under the van (from the front to rear) and can see the fumes (when stationary) wafting round the van, they come from the tailpipe (thats what it looks like) and kind of wafts around the rear offside wheel area.

So......had a look at the tail pipe, is this in the right position? Shouldnt it point down? I cant remember what my previous vans exhausts were like!


I then checked the heat exchangers which look solid enough but then I found that the heater control pods are in a bit of a state



Is this what is causing the problem? Any other ideas?

Can I sort this without purchasing new control pods? Not bothered about heat.

Also...on a different note, when I was cleaning up the tinware underneath to get rid of the dried up oil there was this pipe that feeds into the offside tin....what is it? I couldn't see anywhere that it connected to, is it a breather pipe for something - sorry I'm a novice!

long time since i looked at a aircold, but im pretty sure that pipe in the last pic is the petrol pump oil drip pipe, it should be there..

have you looked at your tailgate rubber seal and the engine lid seal?

the tailpipe is a bit "pointy-uppy" but not much more than usual, they dont point down, normally straight out ish

if you are not bothered about heat, block the the big air pipe off that runs from the engine to the front, if only to eliminate it

If you're happy with no heat to the cab, then like Mocki says blank the pipes on both sides that the heater pods connect to. That will stop any fumes from the engine end getting into the cab.
I'd take off the short metal pipes from the heat exchangers that the pods are attached to as well if you go down that route. One of my pods was in a similar state to yours so I pulled it off and replaced it with a length of high-temp ducting. In the winter it means hot (well warm) air all the time, and in the summer I just undo the mikalor clamp holding it on the heat exchanger and put the ducting somewhere safe 'til it gets cold again.
