Starting to fix rust on my van

Post by itsawhalefish »

Hi

In other threads I have wrote I have a 1982 T25 Aircooled, 2 litre, automatic..

Starting to try and work on the rust issues, I have had a couple things welded (Cab step, and bottom slider door)

Cab Step before:

Cab Step after:

Slider Door before:

So that was the major things so far, the front will need doing, and the windshield corner needs some work.

all welding was done by Just Dubz in Shefford

But for the moment I would like to work on little things, never done any rust repair before, so I was wondering what people would suggest to do with these kind of area:

Do I just sand it down? or what?

Thanks!

Sean

And my van in all its glory!

They set it off really well, but i suppose its each to his own :D. The yellow on your van is what i am thinking of painting mine in, i done bottom half in ivory and left top in the original pastel white but next year i will be going for yellow/white, i think thats a real cool retro look, as with all our vans the work seems never ending, but hey what would we do in our spare time without them

Fixing rust patches is not usually a quick affair, so be prepard to do more than you thought you would ned to and then you'll be more patient and prepared. if you have the skills to do it then if it were me i'd carefully attack it with wire brush on drill or anbgle grinder in the very locaised area then sand down with wet and dry until you are back to exposed metal as opposed to rusty metal, then i'd use a rust inhibitor like dinitrol or hydrate 80 or even just rust remedy- there is a favouriute of people on her called vatcan but TBH they all do a similar job. Aftr all of that you'll need to make a locaised repair using self-etch primer and then top coats. All of this can be done easily , loads of good vids on U tube with advice about spraying, using rustoleum or just making localised repairs. Don't skio any stages or the rust will come back. Good luck. NB It might be that if the rust is bad it would need welding rather than bodging back together. My welder must have paid for itself 50 times over in the last 20 years.
