Construction of fuel tanks query

Post by toolsntat »

Ok, we know there are as a rule 2 places on the bottom of the tank to take hoses for flow and return depending on engine type.

The question is are these connections just small bits of pipe into the tank or do they do something "special" on the inside like bend around in a complicated way :?:

Have you looked inside an old tank or seen a drawing?

Cheers
Andy

if you notice there is a round raised/lowered (depending on how you look at it) circular section in the middle of the tank (underside)
I do believe there are some baffle thingys going on inside and the small pipes you mention draw the liquid from this section - as it is the lowest part, and the baffle things help out to prevent fuel sloshing about, say if you were to corner on a near empty tank you wouldn't want engine cutting out
I've never cut one open to see mind you

im pretty sure , long back in the mists of time, many years ago, when the world was still black and white, we had a diagram about online showing that the outlet pipe actually goes up to the top of the tank and back down into the centre......and that the return is just straight in and stops..... there is a baffle ,and a injection tank is different , not only by the size of the outlet pipe....

but i cant remember for sure, and i cant find said diagram.......picture, slate drawing or what ever it is i cant remember......

Looking from the rear of the tank the right hand outlet has a plastic pipe that goes to the low point of the tank. I have a spare tank and will try to take some photos tomorrow but it may be difficult to get a pic through the gauge sender hole.
