MOT Day - Not too bad?

OK so after having the van 2 years finally got round to MOT time.

Failed on:

[*]Parking brake efficiency below requirements (12%)
[*]Nearside front brake binding
[*]Nearside & Offside stop lamps not working

When I got home the NS wheel was sizzling hot . I have bought a caliper kit with the rubbers in etc but not sure this will help?. Any advice on fixing this? Or am I looking at having to replace (early Teves)? And if I do replace do I have to do both sides to stop imbalance?

Secondly I have replaced the rear brakes and all the internals (piston, springs etc). I released the handbrake and tightened the the nut under the van that the 2 cables join to but I still only got 12% efficiency in test. These are brand new pads so not run in at all. Do I just need to tighten them via that little service hatch on the back with the special tool?

How can you not bother checking your brake lights ?

I did ages ago (year) and assumed still ok. I think it maybe the connection under the dash loose as I cant see both lights being out from bulbs. Easy fix so it's the calipers I am concerned about.

Well it was bit of a rush as I needed to get it in before the Easter bank holidays etc. And to be honest I thought it'd fail on more so was using it more as a mechanic check over. But yea bit daft I know.

Calipers...

I think I am right in believing mine are early TEVES (1983 B reg van)??



I will go and have a play in a minute. But am I right in thinking first step is jack up / remove wheel. Remove pads and then try and push the offending piston back home?

Do I try and get the piston moving with the calliper still on the disc?

By the look of those disc's they need changing!

Plus you have adjusted the handbrake wrong! suggest you read up on how to do it properly!

Looking at your disc photo....

Doesn't look too good.

I'll bet you will have to use a log splitter or equivalent and a heavy hammer to get the disc pads to move back.

You must replace both sides,even if you only do the pads.

Your dust seals will probably be cooked.

Do the job properly, bleed the brakes, (upper and lower nipples)

Controlled stopping is nice.
