Leisure Battery Electrics

Post by Jammyjuju »

Hi there I have a couple of questions, can anyone tell me if its normal to have power at the cables that connect to the leisure battery,( obviously when not connected) persumably this will discharge the main battery as well as the leisure battery if I left the interior lights on? The 'zig' unit is an autosleeper one with no switch to select which battery is being used.
I also tried plugging in the mains to see if there was a voltage increase, there wasnt, but I havent checked the fuse, carrier etc, 240 volts on in van as sockets come on. so I persume ther is no charge other than when the engine is running.
Any help would be appreciated,

I did not have a leisure battery fitted to my autosleeper, when I fitted one I also bought an intelligent charger,it was not particullaly cheap but simple to fit and have no problems in the 12 months it has been fitted

Ok
the leisure circuit is separate from the van battery
the leisure battery will charge automatically when the engine is on... and switch over automatically when the engine is off.
The fridge only works on 12v with the engine running
The split charge relay may have stuck or siezed in the on position.
Mine is located in the engine bay but some later conversions have them under the drivers seat. Finding it should be easy from the alternator. There will be two thick red wires one will go to the relay... The other to the van batt.
What were you expecting from hook up?
Unless you have the MC 2000 control panel your hook up just works the fridge, 230v sockets and the spot light on the wardrobe

Thanks for the info will check the relay, I thought when I was on mains it would keep the leisure battery charged so I can keep the stereo, sub woofer and Tv on which I have a bypass switch on the dash for direct feed to leisure battery so I dont loose the charge on the main battery, I followed the wikki instructions for fitment but must have a bad connection as even when the leisure battery is disconected the stereo works in both positions, I know I'm a donkey ( i have disconected the feed for now until i have time to attack the mess of cables) my main concern was draining the main battery if the interior lights where left on, the fridge we tend to use on gas. if the relay is stuck is this a repair or replace job?

Just pressed the condition light and its gone to red, so something is draining the battery, the batterry may be pants as its been there for a least 5 years and was only holding its charge as the power was being supplied via the dodgy radio conection?

Read the book looked at the circuit, thanks, the relay i think is in the engine bay, there were two side by side one for the glow plugs? gave them both a wiggle, not even sure if it is the right one, put the volt meter on the cables to the lesiure battery and no voltage as expected, ( unlike yesterday) leisure battery has 10.volts and main battery normal so no drain. so suspect need a new leisure battery if i want some lights when not on mains, need to redo the switch for the stereo must be something to do with the permanent feed, can this just be wired to the leisure battery and not the engine battery anyway? is there a need to be connected to main battery?
Cheer peeps

Yes... Connect the head unit to the leisure.
I use a direct fused feed
BTW a starter battery will suffice for your needs and a UK code 096 will fit snug in the batt box.
Just a thought if funds are tight as they are quite cheap
