Anyone wild camp at Loch Lomond and on Skye ?

Looking around the wild camping law around Lomond has changed due to cocks with tents , but the law is very unclear around vans

From what I've read you're still OK in a van it's just no camping in tents along the shore of the Loch itself.

Wild camped in a tent at Isle Ornsay many moons ago and also on the site at Staffin near Dunvegan. Unfortunately the people we met in Isle Ornsay coloured my views of Skye - let's say I wouldn't want to return any time soon (not to mention the fact that I had dreamed of spending my honeymoon in the sun by the Med, not in a 2 man tent in the rain in Scotland!). Other than that, we camped all over the place and on very few sites and never had any bother. That said, may have changed in 30 years!

You should be able to wild camp on Skye without any problems.I work over there several months a year and have seen many vans rough camping. If you like getting away from it all places you should head for Elgol.To get there you will go into Broadford then turn left at the Broadford hotel and go along the single track road there are plenty of places there to camp right below the cullin mountains(there are no shops out this way)the only bad thing is that you have to come out the same way.On the north end of Skye if you head Uig then over towards Duntullem there are one or two nice spots there over looking the sea.There are also plenty of large laybys after Staffin that you could use they are only about 30 mins past Duntullem. As for Loch Lomand if you can't find anywhere i would highly recomend the campsite in Luss.

Just back from both as our first trip of the year...was vans/caravans in most of the laybys on the A82 (a good few looked like groups of travellers...) along the loch side, even saw a few tents. Skye was a whole different game...no one about, but hundreds of perfect sleepy spots even along the main road. We stayed in the campsite at Sligachan Hotel....site was closed but hotel happy for us to use it

i lived on skye in the early 70's, has it changed much?

is the tartan painted bay hitop still round the back of sutherlands VW garage in broadford? issit even a VW garage these days?

Sutherlands of Skye is no longer, but they replaced 2 cv joints and repacked the other 6 for me in 1992 on my first syncro.


We free camped on the shores of the loch whilst the parts arrived.

Well we are back from our 10 day break .. Haggistastic is all I can say

Scotland is teaming with sleepy/wild-camping spots , We camped on the side of Loch Lomond without any problem , watched the sea plane take off , It was a little noisy due to being just off the A82 , we could have found somewhere nicer but I was tired and it was only of one night. On a different note we noticed quite a few caravans in the lay-bys , could have been workers or travellers , so you may need to pick the spot a little more carefully

We did notice a lot of the lay-bys around Scotland sporting brand new 'NO OVER NIGHT PARKING' signs , again we just got off the track a wee bit and found somewhere nice and quite.

Skye was beautiful and we enjoyed every second of it , saw otters , eagles , red squirrels etc etc .. and wild camped all the time we were there.

One thing to note is the toilets in the Kyle of Lochalsh , 20p for the loo but a £1 for a 15 minute shower , well worth seeking them out (free parking aswell)

Out of the 10 nights we did 5 on 'real sites' due to our needs , we used caravan and camping club site ranging from a fiver to £15 which was fine (total camping cost £60)

i was last over there in about 1995 or so and left a big poster for a swiss vw meet with angus.

he looked a bit baffled, don't think he really remembered me...........

We did notice a lot of the lay-bys around Scotland sporting brand new 'NO OVER NIGHT PARKING' signs.

We noticed that too Mark, we travelled up to Deskford, then over to Durness, down to Ardmair, then through the Cairngorms and down to Braemar.

for every layby with a "no overnight parking" there is another two without one!...we drove up the A82 to Glencoe from Glasgow on Friday night and almost every possible space had a car/tent/camper/mobile home in it - no-one seems that bothered, be it the locals, or the police. Loch Lomond is "patrolled" by the national park but they seem more intested in stopping the "drunken youth" element rather than decent respectable tax paying citizens. Just remember to leave where you sleep tidier than you found it or we will close the border!

brill about to be an owner of my first ever camper and wow as we live only an hour from Loch Lomond I can say that the park doesnt want camping in the south of the loch. (mainly tents) but above tarbet was driving past on saturday and loads of tents on the shore... we see a lot of wild camping happening around here too (Cowal penninsular) and cant wait to be joining them... hope we can get the insurance in our budget and we will be off both to lomond, skye and fortwilliam area. taking our off road tandem mountain bike too... cant wait
