Fan motor rewire

Just a quicky, the radiator fan has never worked properly - so after much expense in trying to get it fixed, i've decided to just wire it up yo a switch on the dash, and switch it on manually when the engine is getting hot...

Anyhoo, does someone know what electical cable rating i should use? i was hoping to find an amp rating on the fan itself, but there is no rating on it...

If you're not using the automatic fan switch why not use the wires from that?

If I may say what you're doing is nuts...
wiring a chicken switch to override the automatic temp. controlled switch is one thing...completely relying on a manual switch isn't a good idea.

i just couln't get the thing to work reliably... sitting onthe M25 last summer - crawling at 5 mph with an over heating engine for 4 hours wasn't fun. i didn't really fancy pulling through all that cable when i could just rewire it with new - easy! (ish) - but your'e right - i could pull it through and use it...reduce - reuse-recycle...

I'll assume you changed the rad switch for a brickwerks one, and fully tested the fan motor, and motor connector block, making sure the relay was good and the fuse.

as that's all that can go wrong...
I put my switch in an electric kettle of boiling water to make sure it switched on..with it connected to the fan motor and ignition on.

other wise it's a cooling system fault adding a manual fan will just cool the radiator coolant. If the coolant isn't being moved through the radiator properly then your fan won't do any thing for the engine
I would say.

and if you do decide on a chicken switch, you need a 40amp relay ideally,, and run signal wires from the dash switch, instead of hoofin great thick wires to a switch the size Frank Enstein would have been proud of!!!

as Kev said, check the fan motor out first, check there is indeed enough voltage underload getting to it, and that the neg side of it has a good connection.
