Selecting gear stalling engine...

Post by !aj! »

1986 auto 1.9 dg

Hi, I have just sorted the braking stalling the engine but now need to solve why selecting gear does it too. (I may point out it did it before i solved the braking, so not related.)

I've tried increasing the idle speed but it doesn't seem to make any difference - engine just dies. I've only tried putting it in reverse as that is the first gear selection from Park. I may point out that it did this when i first bought the van but only in reverse (as i recall) and not quite as bad. The van has stood for a few months but has had the following serviced - gearbox sump sieve and seal, gearbox oil, engine filter and oil, fuel & air filter, carb kit and a new battery.

Any help gratefully received.

P.s ok, ok, i said i solved the braking issue, hands up, i didn't. Just followed the advice! Cheers.

Had a another go at the van yesterday - i find it quite depressing and my motivation is shot! :(

However, started her up (eventually - it seems to take an age for fuel to reach the carb, although once idling it's fine) put her in Drive and cut out. Started her up again (immediately, now warmish) and had a look at the engine, in particularly the carb, when i noticed oil streaming out of the ATF filler tube. So i had a root through here and came up with this -

I found it seized on my van - one (light) tap with a hammer and it freed off. Tried engaging and, bingo, no problemo. Inched down drive, reversed back - seems ok and i am one happy (Easter?) bunny :D

Truth be told, i was fed up with it and thinking of cutting my losses but that has all changed now thanks to the resource that is this Club.

Cheers one and all :ok

well done mate, all ready for Easter now!

I had a scirocco a while back with an auto box and had a similar issue but ran well after a clean and a fulid change. these old auto boxes rely on the pressure within the box as there is no electronics.

out of interest was there a lot of oil or just a bit coming out of the tube?

Wish my Van was an auto!

Yeah cheers matey, i've just got to negotiate the Mot now...

I would say there was a steady stream just piping up and out. Presumably, it would speed up the warmer it got. It put me in a great mood though - from non-runner to runner.
