Sticking speedo

I disassembled the speedo in my caravelle to fix the odometer and now the needle sticks as it goes up the speedo and it requires a slight tap with the flat of my hand on the top of the instrument binnacle to get it moving again.

Could this be the reason for the sticking?

Broken plastic on the cable.

Seems a bit of a coincidence if its not.
I'm not sure if i broke it removing or refitting the cable as i can't remember seeing it damaged when i took it out and it worked fine beforehand.
