Gearbox Oil

Post by bmouthboyo »

I managed to loosen both oil plugs on my gearbox so going to replace the oil.

I have checked my Haynes manual, and looked on the wiki / forum etc but cant seem to find the answers I am looking for.

Basically my van started out as a DG with a DW gearbox (looking at the original sticker up front)

Now some time in its life the engine was replaced with a Mk1 Gti DX engine.

I am unsure what gearbox is in as where you check the code has corroded away over the years. All I know is it is a 4 speed, but from what I can gather this means its not the original DW? (please correct me if I am wrong)

Is there anyway I can find out what gearbox I have?
[*]What transmission oil should I put in?
[*]Where would be the best place to buy (cost / quality)[/b]

Thanks :ok

Any ideas guys?

From what I can tell EP80w-90 GL4 is what I need?

I have found these 2 products on ebay and was wondering which I should go for, but also could I get these cheaper anywhere locally?

£22.24 - Comma http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

£19.90 - Millers http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

If not can someone point me to what I need?

Thanks

You'll get the information you're after a lot quicker if you either used the Wiki, the search function or even scrolled down the technical forum page a bit. This topic comes up regularly.

As stated in my first post I have done that, but its not clear if I should try and get the SAE80 or a GL4, also no mention of current best places to source them or brands people tend to go with.

Also the fact I am not sure of my gearbox and the added fact it will be run with a more powerful GTi Engine.

I have also found this:

Smith & Allan EP 75w/90 Fully Synthetic £23.95 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... fe=sidebar" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But it states API GL4 GL5??? Isn;t the GL5 bad for T25's? Also does fully synthetic cause problems?

Sorry if this comes up a lot but there seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions and as I know very little about the gearbox in terms of miles etc (been sat still for 7 years) I am trying to make sure I do this right.
