Ensure that your cooling hoses resemble this ... Image

Easiest to see is the pair of large hoses crossing the rear of the engine bay.

Update

Picked the van up from the garage new thermostat in. Drove it 11 miles to a different garage that know a little more about Vw!
Driving there the needle moved between the light and right up high with a needle with to max!
The light came on only once! The fan didn't seem to kick in and the heater blew hot and got red hot when the needle went all the way up and light flashed!!

If this is the case then it ain't the water pump.

Thermostat has been changed so (as long as they did it right) it ain't that.

I wonder what makes them think no water is getting to the rad ?

DON'T DRIVE IT ( unless you wish to fork out £1000 for a new engine  )

You need to get someone who knows these vans to look at it.
Ask around on here for a person or trusted garage near you.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Hi all, i'm not an expert, i'm just explaining my experience.

My 1.6TD bus went through a phase of over heating, the cab heaters were hot, the temp gauge was flashing, the radiator had bled fine after my new water pump was fitted, the old one I could turn by hand.

We found that the radiator was only half hot, yet it bled fine with a nice flow of water coming from the bleed bit. Also we found the additional water pump didn't work, not sure if na diesels or petrols have this. So both of these were changed, it's now as good as gold.

Hope this helps someone. :ok

sorry no comment been a busy bee :)

it was the coolant bottle camp which was replaced and still the seal is not good need a new bottle, is that an easy job?
there was an air lock in the system which my fab RAC man sorted for me, the valve in the diagram above at 41 was knacked so he took that out and put a fix in, cant ge them valves anymore! Brickwerks said its not important and to leave his quick fix :)
Its running like a dream now :)

Just need to replace the coolant bottle so any hints woul dbe good:)

Thanks

I'm really sorry but you're making no sense.

Swapping the header tank is easy, Brickwerks sell them, park it with it's backend up in the air to minimise coolant loss. Check the wiki for details.
