How to fix the 'gear spinning on the shaft' odometer problem

Post by Zebedee »

Since i bought my caravelle i've been plagued with the odometer acting up. Sometimes it worked fine, other times not at all or it would read 1/2 the mileage i'd travelled etc.
First i had a problem with the green gear working its way off the end of the shaft causing it to come out of mesh with the worm drive. I used a drop of superglue which cured it for a week or two. When the weather started to get warmer it came off again so i made a little plastic stop plate to prevent it trying to escape.
Problem solved or so i thought.

It started acting up again after another few weeks of hassle free use so i had another look and found the silver gear at the other end was spinning free on the shaft.
I tried superglue again and yet again it fixed it for a while.

I'm now fed up with taking it apart so thought i'd fix it properly once and for all.

Heres a little how to:
First remove the instrument panel, then the speedo head as covered in all good workshop manuals (or even the haynes one  ).

Using a fork ensures the needle isn't broken through being bent. Do not lever against the speedo face as it will dent easily.

Remove the 2 small screws and take off the speedo face.

Small piece of wire inserted through the gears hub and the shaft then bent over on both ends so it can't fall back out again.

If that doesn't stop it spinning on the shaft then nothing will.
