Leisure Gas Tanks

Just wondering whether a LPG tank(liquid) can be used as a 'leisure gas' tank (vapour) with the appropriate regulator (37mbar) - or is there more to it?

LPG is always stored as a liquid in a tank or cylinder, it only turns to gas/vapour when it is heated above its boiling point which is -42'c for propane (butane is -2'c which is why its not much use in the UK!) it 'boils' when released into the atmosphere (e.g. a gas tap is opened on the cooker etc), you cant buy LPG in vapour form only liquid so whether the tank is a 47Kg cylinder or a small pation heater type cylinder the LPG inside is the same stuff, you will need to check what pressure your appliances are designed to work at as in the UK it is as you have stated 37Mb but some European appliances & regulators can differ e.g. some german appliances can work at as much as 50Mb & some french ones work at only 30Mb, the working pressures are the important part as if it is incorrect you will get 'incomplete combustion' which produces CO which is the silent killer especially in a small area like a van.

For piece of mind a Gas Safe Registered operative would be your best bet for anything like this.

You have to ensure that you have a vapour take-off if you want to use it for anything other than running an engine.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate that propane (and butane) is stored in the tanks as a liquid - my rather poorly phrased enquiry was trying to ascertain whether the tanks used for 'LPG conversions' are inherently different to 'leisure tanks' or is it the regulation of the gas once it leaves the tank that is the important factor.

I think the problem you will get is finding a vapour take off point to replace the liquid take off point, that's if you can. Steve could probably answer your question straight away. My hunch would be you can't (or nigh on impossible to find the right fittings that fit)

Steve (Gasure) used to sell the dual take-off tanks back in the day, sadly with our Bluebird bed there wasn't enough room so we had the upright 'Terroidal' tank. We've copied others since and retro-fitted a Westy leisure tank underneath instead.

I have a westy tank that I considering fitting to my Syncro. But after seeing Jed's tank taking a bit of stick I am now not sure if I will.

Is there anyone who makes a smaller tank as I would be happy with one with a quarter of the capacity?
