Fuel Pressure Regulator broken or vacuum actuator SS engine

Post by Epiphone »

Hi, so now the sun is starting to come out, raising temperatures and making me think if warm weekends away in the Alps, I want to try and get my 2.1 i WBX, dare I say it, reliable.

The last time I had the bus in the garage here in Germany the mechanic said that the Fuel Pressure Regulator is broken, he said that they are no longer made by VW anymore (actually they are via classic parts at 90 euros, can anyone recommend another one, or should I get the VW one?)) and suggested that I replace it. So far the mechanic has been quite good, so not sure why he didnt make more of a fuss about this, he put a cable tie on the valve which comes out horizontally to keep it closed and seemed to be happy with this.

So what does having the valve closed mean, a constant richer mixture which is better than the opposite (leaner) if the valve is broken and is fully open?

So then I see that the part (VW Teilenummer 025 133 035) is available online. So I can simply replace the part. I then thought about putting in a pressure gauge too, why not! These kits are bog standard right, a simple T-junction for the valve?

Thanks, Rich

hi rich,

yes, you'll already have a t-piece with a handy bleed screw in it- where the fuel line comes IN to the engine bay from the tank and splits into 2 pipes going off to each fuel rail (on top just by the v-belt).

try a pressure guage onto that with 15cm or so if fuel hose, just push it onto the t piece and start the engine. should shoot upto 30psi ish, AND hold it for a while when you turn the engine off. if it does drop quickly (less than a minute) then either the regulator or fuel pump is losing it somewhere. mine actually does drop slowly, faster than the bentley says it should, but it does seem to work fine anyway.

PS you can also run the fuel pump without the engine on (by jumping the right hand FI relay), which will be less noisy than running the engine!

can anyone please suggest a good pressure gauge from the internet, experience in these things normally helps

or one with a sender unit and then I could put a gauge in the cab for this too, start to build up my collection of gauges in the dashboard :ok

but what about these brand new pressure regulators with built in gauges, has anyone replaced their original with this?

thanks, Rich

Hi, im confused now, I thought that this part was the fuel pressure regulator

IMG_7091.jpg

1) is the pressure regulator

2) whats that then?

With the cable tie keeping it in an open position

With the cable tie keeping it in a closed position

finally got home and got the trusty haynes manual out (4B.8 16.2).

So this is part of the Mixture Charge limiter and is fitted to the SS code engine only. "Its function is to limit exhaust emissions under certain operating conditions at high engine speeds )above 4500 rpm)

Part 2 is a vacuum actuator

anyone out there with an SS engine?

as i think youve figured out, number 1 in your first pic is the FPR, and you can see the t-piece bleed screw to the bottom right of that in the same pic. if you still think your fpr is faulty, try a cheap pressure gauge onto that (theyre on ebay for about a tenner, get one that can go to above 40psi). thank vw for putting a bleed screw there with a fuel nipple/nozzle ready on it!

so on a German forum they said its

That it makes the shutter on the intake closed so that the motor cant go above 4500 rpm.

No SP or SR are the swiss ones

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... engine.htm

SS 2,1l 4-cyl. Flat4 water-cooled with injection and cat from 89on 68kw / 92bhp Technical.data.
is the powerful but greener engine (due to Kat and the ECU gadjets on it)

OK Im gonna first get a Pressure tester and then depending on that replace my Pressue Regulator, or if thats OK, hunt around europe for a new vacuum actuator. Seems there are more SS engines in mainland Europe.

so I had the air filter off and looked inside and can see that the cable tie, is keeping the flap open there. So thats right then.

There was also a little bit of oil next to the entrance to the air filter, is that normal?

Hi, do know what size that little bleed valve is?

The kit I bought, the smallest is M10, and it looks smaller than that!

Ive bought the wrong one then

http://cgi.ebay.de/KOMPRESSIONSPRUFER-K ... 2159wt_995

this is to pressure test the cylinder.

This cant be used for the petrol then, with a m4 x8 adapter then, im guessing?

nice cheap compression tester that - compression testers test air pressure, you are testing fuel pressure ie liquid, so oil pressure tester or similar but you want accurate reading around the 2-3 bar mark, and finding an adapter from M4 to the gauge will be fun, VW gauge was a few hundred quid plus the adapter
