2.1 Head Cracks!!

Post by ropeman23 »

I'm doing a top end re-build on my DJ 2.1. Was just going to replace the water jackets, but you know how these things go... Anyhow the engine ran really well before I took it out, slight missfire on startup, but cleared within 10 seconds. And the engine has always run rich (all unrelated I think??)

Anyhow when cleaning the heads I've noticed there is a hairline crack between the exhaust and inlet valve on all four ports. Is this usual? I've read on here that anything up to .5mm wide crack is exceptable, is this true? I don't really fancy paying out for new heads.

It's normal and OK... I'm told.
But I wouldn't sleep unless I renewed the head :D

At over £300 a pop each and with everything else I've spent on the lump so far I may as well have gone for a recon  If it's ment to be "normal" then I think I may take my chances.

I'm starting to worry now that I didn't completely check that one of the circlips on one of the gudgion pins was completely home... Maybe I should go to bed and worry about it all in the morning.

I know how ya feel ropeman, my heads were exactly the same. i had them pressure tested & they said they were ok at the moment, but i wasn´t really happy to refit them, then i found a pair of new ones on ebay for 250 quid, so i bought them, so have a look you might find some...good luck

I've gone for it and bolted it all back together. I do about 4000 miles a year in it so I'm hoping they'll hang for a while.
