3rd & 4th gear lost

Post by tomcourtney »

All of a sudden can't get 3rd & 4th gear, 1st 2nd ok and reverse crunches a bit.
Going under the van in half an hour or so hoping to find something obvious with the gear linkage.
Any advice welcome as we are / were planning 10 days touring SW Wales leaving on we'd morning.

Crawl under the back of the van drivers side where the linkage connects to a spindle that goes into the gearbox the spindle is grooved and the linkage has teeth cut into it , linkage side could be worn and slipped

I can now force it into 3rd and bit more force into 4th.
Then I get a spell when 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 easily slipping in and out of all 4 gears maybe half a dozen times before I struggle again with 3 & 4.
Immed after I have to force it into 3 & 4 I struggle with 1st for a while and the stick doesn't feel it's in the right place, putting it into 2nd seems to locate it and 1st becomes easy again and the cycle starts again.
I hope this makes sense to someone, seems to be gibberish when I read it :)

Going back out to look for these grooves and teeth, maybe a pic/ vid from my iPhone could be sent to someone?

Tom
if you are having to force anything then check through from front to back - the four speed linkage and stick I fitted was ok, but check the guides in the box underneath, above the spare wheel, then work back and check the bushes and then the rear linkage set up - if the nylon tips on the front linkage get damaged then no amount of faffing about at the back will sort it.
I have a fully rebuilt ABD in stock if it turns out to be 3rd/4th synchrohub.

Hi tom I had this problem a little while ago with 1st and 2nd, it progressively got worse until one morning I was on my way to get it looked at and snapped off my gear stick on the way. Any way to cut a long story short I got a new gear stick and housing and after fitting had a bit of an overhaul of my linkage all the way from front to back. A bit of a mission on your own so get a friend to help if you can, if not a clamp and a selection of spacers is a god send. First clean up and grease every moving part in your gear linkage then set your gear stick to neutral. Loosen the bolt that holds the two linkage bars together half way along your van get a 23mm spacer and put it between the right hand of your gear lever housing/selector box and get someone to hold in place then get all play out of your linkage and re tighten. This nearly got mine but it still needed minor adjustments after to get it perfect. After this hopefully it should be a bit better. Once youve got it drivable its a good idea to check out all the bushes and moving parts in your linkage and replace any showing any wear.
Hope this helps
Oh yeah lots and lots of good quality grease on every moving part, I found especially all over your gear selector under the gear stick. Good luck :ok

Recon box from Aiden fitted and linkage tarted up. In Scotland and running well.
Sometimes it pays to 'take the hit' and be comfortable in the knowledge that you've got the best you can for the van.
Well Aiden says I have :)
