Water pipes - which is hot / cold

Hi all,

not sure it even matters but when looking in the engine bay is the left pipe the hot pipe leavign the engine or the cold return?

does it even matter?

Run the engine until you can feel just one starting to get warm.

Well I am fitting them to a golf engine so want to make sure I'm connecting. The right way round. My left pipe goes to the bottom of the radiator, right one to one slightly above that.

Does anyone know if left or right should be hot, and also if hot should go to the lower or higher of the 2 connections on the radiator?
