Speedo Faulty

Post by salgarfi »

Hello All,

I guess I should first introduce myself. I'm Sal, and my wife and I have just acquired a T25 AutoSleeper Trident and we're happy as clams!
However, it's turned out that the speedometer is acting a bit erratically, and when It's running more smoothly, it seems to be registering speeds at approximately 20 mph (or so I'm estimating) less than the speed I'm driving at. Any ideas?
I'm a bit worried since we've got to travel a bit of a distance next Tuesday, and we don't want to get caught out in speed traps! help!!

All the best,
Sal

are you running standard wheel/tyre combination? standard is 14". They usually run about 5-10% more than the speed your going at. Have you got a sat nav to compare against?

Hello,
My wheels are standard, and unfortunately, I don't have a sat nav to compare. Also, the discrepancy is more than 10%. But any other suggestions would be more than welcome.

Cable (kinked or frayed or worn ends) or worn hub dome (bearing cover) through which cable goes. Stopped mileage thingy is cog shifted on shaft inside speedo. No other faults you can get really, other than a totally busted speedo

Does sound like worn cable but you might get a better idea if you unclip it from back of speedo, jack up nearest front wheel to it and spin the wheel. Cable should turn freely. Cable fits into speedo at one end and the other goes right through the middle of wheel nearest speedo, held by a small e-cflip. If the dome cap is the prob (should be a perfectly square hole in it, you can hammer the cap fom inside with a flat ended cold chisel to close the hole up a little then use a file to square it up again (or buy a new one I suppose). In the same area, the square end of cable could have worn a groove in it which results in only partial contact - new cable for that r fit a washer behind e-clip as temporary fix . Also check theres aactually an e-clip in place otherwise it can drift in and out.

Hello All,
Well, it looks like I've sorted the problem, but it might be a temporary fix. The square end of the cable is sound and the e-clip is present, but the dust/hub cap was loose (with loads of grease behind it), so I've pressed it back on and fiddled with it until it fit itself firmly in place and now needs a moderate pull to dislodge it. If it can stay wedged in place as it presently is I'd be happy (perhaps I could hammer it into shape to fit tighter?), but I think I'll buy a spare hub cap and e-clips just in case it happens again.
And concerning the number on the speedo, yes it's 805!

Best,

Nah, no need to do that. All you do is find a small washer to go under e-clip That then pulls the worn part of cable clear and on to new metal. Less work and a whole lot cheaper. Its probably been caused as I mentioned above by the square hole starting to round. Again you can sort that with the end of a cold chisel inside the dome. You could replace cable and cap but why bother when the fix is easy enough and will prob last another ten years. Save the money for something more fun.
