Clicking sound from Leisure battery whilst hooked up?

Post by Joninlondon »

HI there,

My 1982 Westfalia T25 was taken on its first trip with me this weekend to Standlake in Oxfordshire. We had a great time, but when we connected the van to the camping site hook up there was a clicking sound from the leisure battery underneath the drivers seat (LHD). It sounds like the clicking an indicator makes when you are turning. In time with the clicking, the battery LED's go to green on one click and then down to amber on the next. Its if the battery charger switch is flicking on and off constantly. What could be wrong? I tried to have a look, but I can't see to get at the box under the seat no matter how a swivel the seat. The steering wheel stops the perfect position to open the flap to access the battery. What could be wrong? Cheers Jon

Sounds like a relay. I'm not familiar with the set up in westys so can't offer anything more. E D I T the title of of your post to include the word 'westy', that way other westy owners more familiar with the set up will probably be able to help. Good luck.

slide the seat forward and you will be able to open the flap. The relay is tucked under the right hand side of the flap. The get at it undo the four locking nuts on the swivel base and lift the seat forward. Bit awkward but easier with a ratchet spanner.

The only relay under that seat is the Westy split charge relay.....this should not in any way be effected by the BBB charger (when you plug the mains in the charger under the Rock n roll bed starts to top up both the starter and leisure batteries)
UNLESS
Someone has replaced the traditional 5 pin double contact double throw relay with a voltage sensing one, and the 14 plus volts from the BBB charger is some how tripping the charge sensing circuit.

The standard setup would not be effected.....all I can say it the relay mounted just next to the battery, hand brake side, needs checking together with the associated wiring.
Post back with your findings.
