Diesel black smoke
Ok , since i changed the engine oil and filter in the LT ( non turbo 6 cyl diesel) , I've noticed (and others) that its producing black smoke , not loads but enough to notice. Valvoline oil 10-40 and bosch filter.
I thought it was the injectors at first so replaced them with newly rebuilt ones , still doing it , no better no worse.
I also notice that a glow plug was leaking around the top seal , replaced that and still no better
Air filter is a new MANN one , just replaced , no better , even ran it for a mile without a filter , again no better.
Now there is no power loss and fuel efficiency is still good . Been to Malton and back this weekend no oil loss and its not over filled.
It tends to be doing under load , but not all the time .
Spoke to a few at the weekend and James mention that the oil I used could be at fault ...
Any help on this greatfully received

Hello Dad,
I can't speak from experience as I've never suffered from black smoke.
Taking a look at this http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke.php suggests it may be a pump issue.
Is the wire going to your fuel cut off solenoid in a good state?

Re: Diesel black smoke
Nottingham Deisel specialists want £250 just to put it on the bench - so its not cheap.
Probably coincidence with the oil change - but if its worrying you change the oil?
Give Grumpy Midget a shout - im sure he mentioned someone did his pump for a reasonable price....
I'd start with the basics first though...

Re: Diesel black smoke
going to change the oil , just for peace of mind , probably wont do anything but won't hurt ..
The new oil is 10-40 , never use that before , usually it 15-40 ...

Hi,Ya Son!!!
Hope yer feeling well, I did notice a slight obnoxios clouud of the Black stuff when I was following you, But I put it down to an old engine, meaning in Diesel miles, only really did it when you tried to Boot it, is 60-65 mph your max,speed.???. Really did notice. it really does Roll on the bends doesn,t it Lol!!
When Diesels Smoke and no loss of power does mean the Pump seals/or Pump timming. But on saying that when its Timming the Pump gives out a real niosy rattling sound.
Just to add about oil. I use Valvoline 10/40 all year normally drop oil 2x a year and only 1 oil filter
The only time i worry is when you see some one who,s following you they are 3-4 car lengths behind yer tailgate.
Then you know your blowing Crap outa back end---------------------

Re: Diesel black smoke
Cheers Geoff , Its an odd one as its not doing all the time.
60-65 !!! was I really going that fast
, the speedo cable is broken
It will/has been up to 75 but the fuel disappears mighty quickly at that speed and the noise level is some what loud
I normally sit at 55 which is comfortable and the fuel consumption is good , was only doing 65 cos we needed to get home
I did notice on one of the long climbs that the temp needle did go up a little more than normal ..
Will do the oil this weekend and see if it make any difference

Re: Diesel black smoke
Black smoke normally means excess diesel being pumped and not being burnt efficiently so it's a pump thing I'm afraid nowt to do with oil that would be a blue/purple haze not the good kind.
Try putting a bit of redex through it firstly before going to any major expense and maybe a quick thrashing(I know its hard to imagine) to try and clean out the engine put a bit see if that helps.

Re: Diesel black smoke
I'v used this stuff http://www.forteuk.co.uk/product.php?id ... _Treatment" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; loads on diesels that fail a smoke test.Remove the filter, drain and fill up with forte, add the rest to the tank, start up and let it run for few mins then give it a good blast, always worked for me..
