cold camping in Belgium
Hi people, Does anybody know if "cold camping" ie sleeping in the camper-van on the road side is permitted in Belgium? Many thanks in advance for any replies!

We've overnighted in service station and apart from parking up in the local "gentlemens meeting place" we had no issues.
We even asked the police, when they came by, if it was allowed - yes of course replied the rather good looking policeladyperson.

Most of the Belgian motorway services have large carparks specifically for folks to kip in, when our gearbox went we slept in one ... woken early by the chickens that live there
... we weren't asked for money or told to move on (good job really
). It's accepted that people get tired and need to stop without taking a bank loan out for the privilage.

Strange thing that - Sleep. I'm sure the UK government warn us about it but do little to help the motorist do it free of charge. For once, good old Europe!!

Re: cold camping in Belgium
We spent a few days in Belgium in December 2009 while trawling the Christmas markets.
There was a good range of spots in the French Aires and German Stellplatz guides. One of the best was a canal side marina in a town called Eeklo, midway between Ghent and Brugges (Nieuwendorpe 1/Z, 9900 Eeklo, Belgium). This spot was 3 Euro a night for hookup and a nice parking spot. Being December we were glad of the hook up and 3 Euro was a bargain. Great location for getting the train to do a pub crawl in Ghent or Brugges.
We found a few spaces that were free, especially near rivers in town. There was frequently a picture sign that looked just like a pop top T25 to indicate overnight parking was allowed.
