If you really want to strip down the pump it would be better to have it somewhere clean, dry and well lit. Any part with springs in will do its best to "explode" as soon as you start to take it apart.

If you start breaking into fuel lines etc make sure you disconnect your batteries just to remove the chance of any sparks from any electrical connections.

fuel pump looks fine, i have fuel going through it, im now thinking the problem is somewere with my carbs, when i pull the throttle bar with my ear to the car mouth i can hear girgling when i release it like there is an air leak or somthing preventing the carb from sucking up the fuel,

i now have now fuel coming through to either carb and i have checked the fuel filter and fuel pump and fuel lines all of wich are ok

any ideas?

if it helps i will explain wot happened when the van origionally cut out the first time,

started engine and van started fine, jumped out to do somthing while it was warming up and it spluttered and died,

not sure if that helps

Have you measured the pressure of fuel being delivered on the engine side of the pump ?
0.2 to 0.3 bar

Do you have a maintenance manual :?:

And where the heck are you?

Your carb doesn't suck up fuel. The fuel pump, pumps fuel into the float chamber. The chamber fills up until the float, floats up and closes the fuel inlet. The extra fuel recirculates back to the pump. The piston moving down the cylinder is what sucks the fuel out of the carb. When you push the throttle rod all you do is open the throttle flap which lets the engine suck more fuel & air from the carb when its turning over, and squirt a dash of fuel out of the accelerator pump. This is to stop the engine hesitating when you floor the pedal to overtake or do a drag start. The "air leak" you can hear is probably the squirt of the accelerator pump.

If you've got clean, fresh fuel in the carbs and a spark at the plugs then the van should run. Did you replace the idle jet that went AWOL a few weeks ago?

boxy the problem is i have no fuel at the carbs, there is a spark and yes if there was fuel getting there it would start and run fine, if i spray easy start down the carbs it will start first time and cut out when it burns off all the easy start.

if i unplugg the pipe wich goes from the fuel pump to the carbs i get fuel coming out wich tells me that the fuel is getting past the fuel pump, but i can see its clearly not squirting into the carbs

i am trying to figure out wot is stopping the fuel from squirting out of the carburettors and into the engine, i have removed the idle cut off solenoid and it looks and works fine so wot do i check next?

i am in witham in essex, i have not checked the fuel pressure from the pump as im not sure how i do that.

i think i mite have to get someone out to come and have a look at it as im not sure wot else to try,

could a possible air leak between the carbs be causing the problem, or maybe the fuel/air mix screw is not letting enough fuel in?

i am thinking maybe i should atke the top off the carbs and check to see if the float is stuck and blocking the fuel from getting through

just had a mechanic out and we tested the fuel coming through from the fuel pump whilst cranking the engine and although there is fuel coming through it is splurting through and not flowing continuosly, so we think the problem is with the fuel pump diagphram or pushrod but i have to let the mechanic tow it away if i want him to fix it and ill probly end up witha big bill.

is there anything i can try before he takes it tomorow to get it going myself? i cannot get the fuel pump off as i do not have the correct hex key though

Don't take this the wrong way.
All this started just after you filled up. The van starts on easy-start. There's fuel coming out of the fuel pump. You didn't fill up with diesel by mistake did you?

I don't know what else to suggest.

fuel coming through it is splurting through and not flowing continuosly
If the engine is only turning over on the starter then the fuel flow will pulse in time with the speed the engine is revolving at because it's a mechanical pump not an electric one.

the problem is i have no fuel at the carbs
Where are you "looking" for fuel in the carb? The float chamber is enclosed in the middle of the carb so you can't see petrol sloshing about. If you're looking down the venturi under the choke flap the petrol there should be atomized and mixed with air so you can't really see that either? The only petrol you might see is what is squirted out of the accelerator pump nozzle.

i have to let the mechanic tow it away if i want him to fix it
If he couldn't fix it or at least pin down the problem to a single cause at the roadside how's taking it to a garage going to help?

If you want to check petrol is getting into the carb, unbolt it from the manifold and turn it upside down. I'm guessing petrol will p*ss out. The only other thing I would do would be charge the battery overnight to make sure you're getting a reliable spark when you try again tomorrow.

on idle only the left hand carb is active.

stop buggering about and tow start it.

if you have spark and fuel then it should go.

sometimes it can be a bitch to get fuel up.

once there its normally ok.

tow it at about 25mph put ig on third gear and drop the cluth in.

a motor turning at 2500rpm pumps a whole load more juice than one cranking at 350 :ok

once its running head to gsf and get a haynes manual!!

Dont think anybody has mention this but...are you getting 12 volts at the fuel cutoff solenoids with the ignition on? If your not then this could well be the reason your not getting any fuel into the carbs...
Mmm what's that strange smell from my exhaust...
