Loss of power when setting off

Post by holdenadam »

Hi,
My 1.9 petrol 1986 manual camper starts and ticks over great.
However, especially when the engine is warm, it takes a bit of effort to get it moving. Once it is going it is also fine. ( tho it went thru a phase of cutting out at lights )

Have serviced it as there was a flat spot. Noticed the rotor arm and dizzy cap were dirty.
Now both of these new parts are gumming up again.

According to Haynes manual hesitance and stalling issues are attributed to dirt particles blocking the carb jets? have you changed your filters recently?

Thats ok i was new here and as it happens with a simular problem, so you say the power drops off at lights when you are depressing clutch slowing down at junctions?
If that is the case it could be many reasons why this is happening however it will almost certainly be due to the carburrettor!

Just start with the basics and most simplest of checks to illiminate them first, air leaks air leaks check and double check for air leaks. What mechanical knowledge do you have with respects to T25's?

I have owned and worked on my 72 beetle for years ( it is now rusting in my garage )

With regards to T25 no experience.
It starts and runs great.
Occasionally it will cut out when decelerating...but not all the time. Starts easily again.
Mainly, when the engine is warm, it takes quite a bit of effort to set off from junctions or lights. you have to rev it more than when cold and sometimes slip the clutch a bit just to get it to move away....once moving there is no prob.

Repplaced dirty plugs, dizzy cap and rotor arm but these seem to be getting dirty again.

try this check
accelerate VERY slowly moving the pedal in small amounts.
Does the engine still hesitate?
or does it pull smoothly

the oil is normal

Ok excellent adleast you are one up on me as i had absolutelly no idea off mechanics when i started,
Is your carb a Pierburg 2e3 ?
Check for leaks using wd40 spray or carb cleaner seems to be the accepted method.... word of advise i didnt find any leaks like this so i just replaced the rubber braided connectors which attach the pipe from the dizzy and the air filter to the carb as these are prone to perishing.
Check manifold gasket carb body gasket also the servo brake hose is common to faults left of engine pipe with a non return valve which can fail.
Then check choke pull down unit by pulling pipe off and sucking through it to see if it will hold vacum.

I done all this and still had the problems which resulted in a full carb rebuild to rectify it, however i will add that i found alot of air leaks and defective choke pull down unit along the way however it all needed doing,
