Fitting a reccon/2nd hand engine..

hi,

as all the others have said ,do it yourself i took one out of one of my buses the other week and i'd never done it before it took about half an hour. its only nuts and bolts and a bit of a wiggle to get it off the gearbox. also as others have said get a decent 3 tonne trolly jack and some axle stands or ramps and a decent set of spanners and a socket set and screw drivers and your away. also the money you'll save not paying the garage will pay for the tools and you'll always have them to do the other jobs the will without a doubt come along in time. good luck and if you do get stuck theres loads of really helpfull people on here that are more than happy to help and give advice.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your advice - spend the weekend up to my pits in oil but hey presto it's in! Took way longer than we thought - prob about 14 hours in all! Problem was the second hand engine I'd bought didn't come with any tinware and when it had been taken off some of the screws sheered off (obviously been bodged a bit as mine were all nuts).

It still isn't starting yet - we changed the dizzy over from mine and i'm not sure it's set up right. Anyone got any tips on this?

Will probably have to get a garage to set up the timing anyway so may just tow it there but would be nice to get it going and drive it there!

Learnt a lot all in - knowledge that will be invaluable in the future i'm sure. Plus purchased some tools for life!

Annoyingly my engine looks in better nick all-round - however i've seen the one I've put in running great!

With a bit of luck next weekend will be it's debut outing!!

Now I have my old engine out i'm not sure whether to sell it as it is or take the head off and see if I can fix whatever the problem is with cylinder. Anyone fixed a piston or ring before? How hard can it be?!

Well, not hard but bit pointless doing one barrel in my view. Invariably creates imbalance and then other things decide to book a holiday soon after.
