Found the leak

kept losing coolant
saw a gleam of water around the sensor on top of the header tank
undid it and bingo, it fell to bits

the coolant would evaporate when hot

a trip to Baxters little shop of horrors is in order then Kev ,that looks like the one we took off the LT whist Si was looking over it for me .. get the VW one

easy to miss , mine only leaked when up to temp and like you say evaporate away the evidence
