4th fuel filter and counting.....
Right ok heres the story.
I have fitted a second hand fuel tank over the weekend (1.9 DG 1986 Petrol) and filled it to half way and used it with no problems but now the tank is getting to the 1/4 mark i have gone through 3 fuel filters! like one a day! Is this normal after fitting a second hand tank?
What is inside the filter is brown rust like deposits.
Thanks for your help
Rob

Re: 4th fuel filter and counting.....
If i ever fit a second hand tank to anything I flush it out with old petrol or such like, as all the sediment will have been dislodged, also the tank could have been empty for a while and therefore would have rusted a bit and now its come away?

Re: 4th fuel filter and counting.....
If all you're using to clean up the fuel in the dinky in-line fuel filter you're going to need loads of them. The dirt holding capacity of that type of filter is designed for "clean fuel". The amount of crap in an old tank can block a filter that size in minutes. You'd be better off draining the tank through a fine mesh 50-100mU to get rid of the worst of the rust etc and then using this fuel to flush it again a couple of times. Have a word with a local hydraulic company to see if they can sell you a cartridge filter element to use. It won't be designed for fuel but it'll hold a lot more crap than the in-line ones.

Re: 4th fuel filter and counting.....
When was the tank last brimmed? this sounds a little like a classic rusting through on top section of the tank - easily told by a strong smell of petrol up the front end of the van and by petrol on the floor when you brim the tank...
Did you have a tap/poke/ inspection for small peppered holes on the top of the tank before fitting it?

The tank was practically new when fitted but not rinsed out with some petrol etc. Classic school boy error i know.....
Thanks for the advice

Done 5 miles today with no more problems BUT it seams to be idling a bit higher???
Is my van doomed?!
Thanks again

Thanks and yes I'm a bit of a fool! So do you think that my carb has got "pooh" in it now? Just looking in the Haynes manual for carb removal!! Or is there an easy option eg spraying carb cleaner in?
Thanks

it's not hard to remove. just follow the haynes and be patient
getting the rubbish out of the float bowl can't be done with sprays.

Thanks i will look into doing this over the weekend. Do i need to replace any gaskets etc when replacing the carb after cleaning? Any tips on the job or things to look out for?
Thanks again

Re: 4th fuel filter and counting.....
there's a gasket between the two halves, you may be lucky and it doesn't rip , otherwise you want the refurb kit which has everything in, 90% of which you won't use, but might need or you can make a new gasket, but there are lots of very small holes in it so difficult to make this one

Re: 4th fuel filter and counting.....
So after breaking down AGAIN this morning on my way to work and using another 2 large fuel filters my girlfriend has ribbed me enough to take the fuel tank off again over the weekend and clean/flush it out.
Does anyone know a good method to doing this? I have read that soapy water and pebbles in and shaking it about works well?? But what worries me is if there is rust inside the tank doesn't it mean that rust will keep coming back or does petrol stop it rusting further?
Thanks for the extended advice
Rob

I'm shocked there hasn't been a "LPG it then problem solved" comment
Does anyone know if the tanks were lined/coated in the factory? I suspect not and I'd be stunned if the JK/other repo's would line/coat the inside of the tanks before they sell them
