Missing wire on split charge relay (westy)
I think my split charge relay is knackered. I have ordered a new one, and from reading various posts have deduced (hopefully) which wires attach where. However I do not seem to have a wire connected to pin 86. Does anyone have any idea what should be connected to pin 86 It's a 1980 Joker if this helps.

Re: Missing wire on split charge relay (westy)
The original relay is pathetic!
heres a schematic good luck! http://www.westfaliat3.info/Westfalia_J ... 211010.pdf
this one is slightly clearer it has 86 on relay going to earth from what I can see a 2.5 guage brown wire.

Re: Missing wire on split charge relay (westy)
Thanks for the information . I take it I can just connect terminal 86 to the van bodywork as there is not a lead or wire already available.
Unfortunately I have just ordered another 30A relay as I have tried to swap like for like. I assume I should have gone for something a little meatier.

Re: Missing wire on split charge relay (westy)
The other pin on that side of the relay the relay 85 should become live when you start your engine so test it to make sure. so yes pin 86 will go to earth take your pick you could wire it onto the leisure battery negative terminal.
My original westy relay was partly melted and browned with age and use. I fitted a 100 amp from memory
http://www.rawcomponents.co.uk/100-amp-12v-relay.html
The amps drawn depends on the capacity of your batteries and the output of your alternator + how depleted they are when you start the van. You can safely over engineer the relay just make sure the fuse is not rated higher than your wiring and you will be OK. As far as I know there is not a fuse at the starter battery end of the Westy it wouldn't go amiss to fit one in line there especially if you are messing with the other end and not sure of the outcome. The biggest fuse in the westy set up is 25 Amp which would suggest you don't exceed this for fuses else you may be stressing the old wires.
Also check

There are twin 87 pins on the correct relay one goes to the leisure positive and the other I belive goes on to the fuse box under the dash from memory.

Great. Thanks again.
I think I will definitely pop a fuse in line with the starter battery, just in case I bugger things up

Re: Missing wire on split charge relay (westy)
Connected up pin 86 to earth. Would you believe it the old Relay started to work.
Oh well at least I have spare now
Can only assume it was never really working. Not sure how my battery never went flat Maybe charged up while on electric hook up.

Here's a simply diagram to explain the aux battery relay as well as the fridge relay in my westy. Please note that only one batterys' power level can be attached to the fridge/stove LED panel NOT both

Re: Missing wire on split charge relay (westy)
Nice one, I take it you have upgraded the wiring between the batteries. Which route did you take the new wiring the same as the old?

New wire is run under carpet between the seats, one hole drilled in each battery box. I also used 10 gauge wire and not 6.

Hi just going through fridge fitting meself...sorry if I'm being dumb but could someone please tell me what wire or were you wire into the ignition so the fridge only comes on when the van is running? cant quite make it out
thanks

Blue wire in the aux battery box is the trip wire from the ignition.

Thanks for the reply I probably am being really dumb now but...I thought the wire from relay no86 went straight to the ignition and connected there somewere I'm a bit confused the electrolux manual(which isnt very clear) says it goes to ignition but doesnt say were! sorry if I'm missing something, I dont have a westy, I have a zig unit but was told it doesnt wire there it goes straight to the main battery hmmm well Ive done all that but am baffled as to were in the ignition to conect to?

Re: Missing wire on split charge relay (westy)
The blue wire in the battery box comes from the main fuse box and originates from the alternator. Are you using the fridge cut off relay? If so that blue wire just actuates when the van is running so the fridge doesn't drain your starting battery. How were you powering the fridge?
